Reminder: increased tick exposure with warmer weather

As warmer weather arrives, so does a greater risk of tick exposure. It is advisable to check your children daily for ticks.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC):

  • Ticks are tiny insects that can transmit Lyme disease and other illnesses through their bites.

  • Deer ticks thrive in shady, moist areas at ground level.

  • They tend to cling to tall grass, brush, and shrubs, typically no more than 18-24 inches off the ground.

  • These ticks also inhabit lawns and gardens, particularly near the edges of woods and around old stone walls.

  • Once a tick attaches to the skin, it usually crawls up the body in search of a protected area, such as beneath clothing.
