Water Safety & Drowning Prevention

In accordance with New York State law, our school district provides annual information to families regarding water safety, drowning prevention, and safe swimming practices to ensure a healthy and safe environment for all students.
Active Supervision
- Stay Within Reach: Keep young children and inexperienced swimmers within arm’s reach at all times near water.
- Designate a “Water Watcher”: Assign an adult whose sole responsibility is to watch the water without distraction (no phones or books).
- Lifeguards are Backup: Lifeguards monitor the entire pool or beach, but parents remain the primary supervisor for their children.Drowning Prevention
- Silent Danger: Drowning occurs quickly and quietly—struggling individuals are rarely able to wave or yell for help.
- Use Proper Gear: Always wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets when boating or swimming in open water.
- Avoid Inflatables: Water wings, pool noodles, and inflatable toys are not safety devices and can fail.
Safe Swimming Practices
- Never Swim Alone: Always use the buddy system, regardless of age or swimming skill.
- Check Water Depth: Never dive into water less than 8 feet deep or into unknown natural bodies of water.
- Weather Watch: Exit pools and open water immediately at the first sound of thunder or sight of lightning.
