Spring safety reminder: guidelines for students riding bikes and scooters

Dear S-G Families,

As we welcome the (hopefully) warmer weather in the days and weeks ahead, we also begin to see more bicycles, scooters, and skateboards in use, especially during arrival and dismissal times when traffic around our schools is at its peak. With the growing popularity of electric-assist bikes and scooters, it’s a good time to revisit some important safety reminders for students commuting to and from school.

Helmets Save Lives:
Whether you’re riding a traditional or electric-assist bike or scooter, wearing a helmet is a must. Electric models can travel at higher speeds, increasing the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 48–85%, and the risk of serious head injury by 60–85%.

Know the Law:
According to New York State Vehicle & Traffic Law §114-e, it is illegal to operate an electric scooter at speeds over 15 MPH. Please make sure students are aware of this important regulation and riding within legal speed limits.

Ride Solo:
Most electric scooters and bikes are designed for single riders only. Carrying extra passengers can make these vehicles unstable and limit safe turning and braking. Please remind your child to ride solo at all times.

Follow All Traffic Laws:
When riding on the road — whether motorized or not — bikes and scooters must obey the same traffic laws as cars. This includes stopping at stop signs, obeying traffic lights, and always looking both ways at intersections, even in areas that “never have traffic.”

By following these guidelines, we can help ensure that all of our students travel to and from school safely. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school community safe.
