Dear S-G Families and Community,
We would like to provide you with an update regarding the efforts of our Reimagining Our Schools Committee, which aims to enhance our elementary education program in light of declining enrollment and our commitment to fiscal responsibility to our taxpayers.
On Wednesday, Nov. 5, six work groups composed of volunteer parents, staff, board members, and community members, met with the main committee. They discussed their assessments of key areas, including staffing, facilities, and the possibility of a school closure. The work groups have been focusing on attendance, grade level configurations, human resources and personnel, staff and student transitions, innovative uses for the school, and communications. You can access the work group minutes, presentations, and research on our dedicated Reimagining Our Schools initiative webpage.
During the Board of Education meeting this past Monday, I presented these findings to the school board. At the conclusion of my presentation, I asked the board if they felt prepared to decide on the repurposing or closure of a school. The board offered a 6-1 endorsement in favor of moving forward with the repurposing or closure of one of the four Scotia-Glenville elementary schools.
Despite the information published in today’s Daily Gazette, no particular school has been chosen for closure or repurposing. Following the directive from the school board, the work groups will reconvene to explore various options based on the work done to date, that will ensure the best possible outcomes for students, staff, and our community.
Community forums will be scheduled to ensure that parents, teachers, and local residents have the opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns. The first is planned for Thursday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. in the Middle School Cafeteria. In the meantime, the school district will provide regular updates to keep the community informed and engaged throughout the process. Transparency and collaboration are key components as we work towards making decisions that prioritize educational excellence and community needs.
Please reach out through the email reimagining@sgcsd.net if you have any comments or questions.
Thank you!
Susan M. Swartz, Superintendent
Scotia-Glenville Central School District
