“Being on the floor with the kids and hearing the announcer each time an athlete scored—it’s unforgettable,” Coach Ron Ashcraft recalled. About 50 S-G fans came to cheer on their team and the arena buzzed with anticipation. “This was the highlight of our season,” he said. In that decisive game, the team truly excelled. “They played their best game of the year,” Coach Ashcraft said. “Outstanding rebounding, high percentage shooting—the partners did an excellent job sharing the ball, keeping everyone involved.”

Unified team spirit cultivates unity and growth

The essence of the team lies in its spirit of inclusivity. “Students participate in unified basketball for the right reasons,” Coach Ashcraft emphasized. “They compete, meet new friends, and build relationships. Our partners take on leadership roles, helping athletes reach their full potential.” The genuine care between athletes and partners was a reward in itself, enriching everyone involved.

Inclusivity was woven into the fabric of every practice. “We began with ‘icebreaker’ activities to help players get to know each other,” he explained. “I designed practices so our partners led the drills, allowing them to assume leadership responsibilities and understand their teammates’ abilities.” This approach fostered a deep sense of belonging and camaraderie among the players.

While there were countless memorable moments this season, one stood out vividly for Coach Ashcraft—the assembly game against Schuylerville. “We played in a packed house, the entire student body cheering us on,” he said. “For most of our players, it was the largest crowd they’d ever played in front of.” The gym was alive with energy, culminating in a 54-46 victory. “The cheerleaders led the school in the YMCA dance at halftime, and the team thrived on the energy and hype,” he said. “A very memorable moment for sure.”
