Sean O’Brien, a passionate science teacher at Scotia-Glenville Middle School, has been chosen as one of 18 teachers from the Capital Region to join the New York State Master Teacher Program. This four-year initiative unites exceptional Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) educators from all over the state to work together, innovate, and motivate the next generation of STEM leaders.

“I am honored to be selected for this program and excited to collaborate with fellow STEM educators from across New York State. I look forward to bringing fresh strategies and resources back to Scotia‑Glenville to enhance student learning, inspire curiosity, and ensure every learner has the support to succeed.” – Sean O’Brien

Mr. O’Brien instructs Regents Earth and Space Science, as well as Science 7 and Science 7 Accelerated and is recognized for his passion and commitment.

He has a strong educational background and nearly twenty years of teaching experience.

Matthew Hubbell, Director for Mathematics and Science K-12, praised Mr. O’Brien’s achievement, noting that his participation will elevate the school’s science program and benefit colleagues and students alike. “We are extremely excited for Mr. O’Brien to have the opportunity to further develop his craft, as well as explore new science content and instructional methodologies,” said Mr. Hubbell.

At the program’s orientation at the University at Albany, Mr. O’Brien had the opportunity to meet the new cohort of teachers from the Capital Region. He looked into exciting professional development offerings and took part in a writing workshop. “We spent the afternoon exploring and writing in the seven styles of restorative writing (productive, reflective, responsive, creative, commemorative, expressive and affirmative) with the goal of improving our practice as teachers by reflecting,” he said.

Throughout his career, Mr. O’Brien has continually nurtured inquisitiveness and achievement in his students, while also mentoring new educators and pre-service teachers. Outside of the classroom, Mr. O’Brien is passionate about studying weather patterns. This interest enhances his teaching by offering unique perspectives that truly engage his students.
