Flag Day tradition at Lincoln marks 250th anniversary of independence

Lincoln Elementary School had a Flag Day ceremony today that was basking in patriotic pride. For more than 20 years, this tradition has brought together staff, students and local military members to show respect for what the American flag stands for.

The gathering on the front lawn of the school was centered around the flagpole, with each participant holding a mini flag to commemorate the occasion. This year was extra special because it lines up with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, making it a great time to think about our country’s history and freedoms.

The event was further distinguished by the attendance of Chief Master Sergeant Moughan and personnel from the 109th Airlift Wing. Their involvement highlighted the gravity of the ceremony as they presented the school with a new flag and directed the formal transition from the old colors. Liam, a fifth-grader at Lincoln and son of Chief Moughan, participated in the proceedings, carrying the new flag with a sense of dignity.

The attendees were moved by Chief Moughan’s reflections on the history of the flag and its lasting legacy. After he finished, everyone joined in to say the Pledge of Allegiance together.

Chief Moughan shared news of his upcoming retirement this year. Even though he’s finishing his military career, he said he would be honored to come back next year to fulfill his personal tradition at this ceremony that started eleven years ago when his oldest son was in second grade.

Music made the ceremony lively. Second grade teacher Mrs. Rachel Harrison sang the National Anthem, and then all the students joined in for patriotic favorites like “Grand Old Flag,” “This Land is Your Land,” and “My Country Tis of Thee.”

The students returned to the school in a procession, waving their flags to the rhythm of patriotic music. It was a beautiful tribute to long-standing traditions and a shared sense of community.
