A first-rate journey celebrating holidays around the world

Mrs. Brockman’s social studies unit for December focused on “holidays around the world.” First graders at Glen-Worden explored various countries and the unique ways they celebrate the holiday season. Over the past few weeks, students formed personal connections with these traditions and learned new ways to celebrate with their families.

The center-based journey around the globe allowed students to engage with non-fiction books, complemented by activities that reflected the cultural beliefs of each nation. “They were captivated throughout the entire experience,” Mrs. Brockman said. “It’s wonderful to connect their celebrations with different cultures.”

Throughout the unit, students discovered holiday traditions in Mexico, Sweden, India, Israel, Australia, and more. The culminating project delved into Italy, Germany, China, America, Afghanistan and Africa.

As a final celebration, the classroom hosted stations from around the world that turned the classroom into a lively hub of cultural exchange. The stations were run by volunteers, including parents, teachers, and Principal Polikoski. The students created special crafts, listened to stories, and got to take home samples of specialties that were inspired by their learnings. This global adventure not only enriched the students’ understanding but also instilled a sense of respect and wonder for the world’s diverse cultures.
