Dear Parents/Guardians:
I am writing you this letter to inform you of two incidents that we had at the middle school yesterday. One incident involved a student setting off a Òstink bomb.Ó Discipline was dealt with internally.
The second incident involved another threatening message in one of the bathrooms. The police, administrative staff and custodians were immediately involved. We began a search of the building to make sure that an evacuation pathway was safe, in the event we would need to use it. Nothing was found to indicate the threat was real or that we were in imminent danger.
We were able to apprehend the students involved with both incidents. As stated in previous letters, there are very serious consequences for writing threatening messages, falsely reporting one or doing something that might endanger the health and welfare of anyone in our building. Both incidents involved students doing what they perceived to be a harmless Òprank.Ó I hope each of you will take this opportunity to discuss the importance of making good decisions with your son/daughter and not participating in behavior that could lead to very serious consequences.
I do intend to lock most of the bathrooms, except the ones that have cameras outside the entrance to the bathrooms. The bathrooms that will remain open are the ones opposite the Main Office (downstairs) and upstairs near room 243 and the library. In addition, the cafeteria bathrooms will be open during lunch periods. We have been continually monitoring when students leave classes as well as monitoring the bathrooms on a frequent basis. It was this process that enabled us to identify who wrote the messages this time.
I want to assure you that learning has not been disrupted and please reassure your child that school continues to be a safe place to learn.
Please feel free to call the middle school with any questions or concerns you may have.
Sincerely,
Shari Keller
Principal
