Superintendent Michael J. Marcelle to accept the
superintendency of South Colonie Central Schools

Scotia-Glenville superintendent to begin at South Colonie on April 25

Superintendent Michael J. Marcelle, who has served as Scotia-Glenville's superintendent of schools since 1996, will leave April 25 to become the new superintendent at the South Colonie Central School District in Albany County.

Michael J. Marcelle
"This is a professional opportunity and challenge for me," said Marcelle, 52. "South Colonie is an outstanding and well-respected school district that has been an educational leader for several years."
The South Colonie Board of Education is expected to name Marcelle as its new superintendent at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at the District Offices, Loralee Drive, Colonie. Marcelle will sign a three-year contract with an annual salary of $147,000.
During his tenure at Scotia-Glenville, Marcelle championed several programs, including distance learning, the transitional kindergarten program, technology initiatives and the district's $27 million building expansion in 1999 that added state-of-the-art libraries and classrooms to the four elementary schools, an auditorium, gymnasium and two-story grade 6 wing to the middle school and gymnasium, fine arts wing and two-story science wing to the high school.
The Scotia-Glenville Board of Education plans to appoint an interim superintendent to serve after Marcelle leaves. The board met on Monday, Jan. 3, with Barbara Nagler, superintendent of the Capital Region BOCES, to discuss the search process for a new superintendent.
South Colonie has 5,800 students at five elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school with a budget of $69 million. Scotia-Glenville has 3,000 students at four elementary schools, one middle school and a high school with a budget of $37 million.
Marcelle noted that South Colonie, as well as all school districts, faces challenges from the federal No Child Left Behind legislation, ensuring adequate funding for education and preparing young children for future jobs.
Before becoming superintendent at Scotia-Glenville, Marcelle was superintendent of the Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School District from 1991-96. He previously served as middle school principal at Mt. Markham Middle School (1987-91), secondary principal (gr. 7-12) at Pine Plains Central Schools (1985-87), assistant principal (gr. 7-12) at Canastota Central Schools (1982-85) and social studies teacher and department head at Canastota Junior-Senior High School (1974-82).
A native of Mechanicville, Marcelle received a bachelor's degree in secondary social studies from the State University College at Cortland in 1974, a master's degree in elementary education from SUC Cortland in 1982 and a certificate of advanced study for education administration from SUC Cortland in 1983.
He is a member of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, a past officer of various teacher and administrative associations, member of the Scotia Rotary and Schenectady County Stop DWI Committee, a past PTA president and past counselor for Boys' State.
Marcelle and his wife, Vivienne, have three daughters: Alexis, a graduate student in college; Hilary, a high school senior, and Lucy, a high school sophomore.
