Karen Bradley and John Carpenter not seeking
re-election to fifth terms in May 16 vote
Two four-term incumbents on the Scotia-Glenville Board of Education will not
seek election to a fifth term in May.
Karen Bradley and John Carpenter – who together served seven years as
board presidents – have announced that they will not seek re-election
May 16.
Any district resident is eligible to seek election to the two three-year,
unpaid positions on the board.
Petitions will be available beginning in March from the Business Office. The
petitions must be returned with 59 signatures by Monday, April 17. The election
for the board and 2006-07 budget vote will be held from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on
Tuesday, May 16.
“It has been an honor to serve the community of Scotia-Glenville for
the past twelve years,” said Bradley. “I have strived to put the
educational needs of the children of our community first.”
She noted that the board has faced challenging times during the past 12 years.
“It is getting harder and
harder for school districts to balance the needs of the children of their
communities with the taxpayer’s ability to pay,” she added. “I
am confident we have talented members of our community who will be willing
to step forward and continue the effort to meet the challenges facing our
schools today.”
Bradley
and Carpenter pointed to the 1999 building project construction – the
largest in the district’s history – as an example of how Scotia-Glenville
students are prepared for the 21st century.
Bradley, a district resident for 24 years, was president of the board from
1996-99. She has served as vice president of the board during the 2004-05
school year.
She is a reference librarian at the Schenectady County Public Library. She
and her husband, David, have three daughters: Rachel, Emily and Sarah.
She received a bachelor’s
degree in English from the College of St. Rose and a master’s degree
in library science from the University at Albany.
Carpenter was vice
president for two years from 1996 to 1998 and served three years as president
of the Board of Education from 1999 to 2002.
A
captain in the Scotia Fire Department, Carpenter has been a district resident
for 34 years. He and his wife, Carol, have two children: Mike and Melissa.
He graduated from Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake and attended Idaho State University
and Schenectady County Community College, where he studied fire science.
