The second Annual Health Fair featuring health and wellness presenters will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 in the new gymnasium at the high school.
The fair, funded as part of the Carol M. White Federal PEP Grant awarded to the district in 2009, is sponsored by the S-G Physical Education Department.
On the same day as the fair, the school budget vote is being held in the other gymnasium, the Elementary Cross-Country Run will be held on the track, and a Physical Education Open House will be held in the new gym.
The fair is being developed to educate students and their families about the resources available to them in the community in the areas of health, fitness and nutrition. The evening is not designed to allow presenters to “sell” their business or products; instead, they are asked to provide health and wellness information, demonstrations and hands-on activities.
Last year's fair drew a wide variety of exhibitors, such as the Cornell Cooperative Extension, Price Chopper, American Heart, Fuel Up to Play 60, American Cancer Society. America Lung, Diabetes Foundation, Ellis Hospital, YMCA, S-G Senior Center, nutritionists, chiropractors, physical therapists, health care plan representatives, Goldstock’s Sporting Goods, Gold’s Gym and youth sports organizations.
The physical education and health teachers are offering a “Passport to Health & Wellness” for elementary students and a check off sheet for secondary students to encourage them to visit the health fair exhibitors. Exhibitors will validate the students’ visit with their own unique stamp or sticker. Teachers will then determine what type of educational credit or activity will be provided for having attended the fair.
