November 16, 2010 Forty grade 3 students at Lincoln Elementary
had their teeth checked today during the Oral Health, Physical
Activity and Nutrition Survey at the school.
They were checked by dental hygienists from Hometown Health in
Schenectady.
Jana Pacquarella, a dental hygienist at Hometown, said Lincoln was
among only two schools in Schenectady County selected to participate
in the survey.
In addition to the brief dental check-up, students were asked about
their television watching habits, how much milk they drink and
fruits and vegetables they eat, how often they exercise and how many
sweet beverages they drink.
Lincoln Nurse Kim Mastroianni said she was very pleased that 40 of
42 sets of grade 3 parents agreed to allow their children to
participate in the survey.
“I’m really proud of our parents for stepping up and agreeing to
participate in this survey,” she added.
Mastroianni said she routinely goes into classrooms starting in
kindergarten to discuss good dental health and other safety issues,
like using mouthguards and bike helmets.
For participating, students received a Crayola Timer Light
toothbrush.
