REQUEST FOR COVERAGE – April 20, 2011
Cross Atlantic Alternative Energy Debate to be held between Scotia-Glenville High School students and students at the Oaks Park High School in London, England on April 27
While buildings in the Capital Region and throughout the United States are not routinely being converted to use alternative types of energy, that movement is happening much more quickly in other parts of the world.
A group of Scotia-Glenville students will exchange ideas with students from the Oaks Park High School in the London Borough of Redbridge about the benefits and shortfalls of various types of alternative energy during the Cross Atlantic Alternative Energy debate.
The event begins at 9:30 a.m. (2:30 p.m. London time) on Wednesday, April 27, in room A-30 at Scotia-Glenville High School. It is scheduled to conclude by 11:30 a.m. (4:30 p.m. London time).
Students in Rick Warren’s English 12 – Career Writing class have been studying alternative sources of energy – nuclear, solar, wind and biomass – in preparation for the debate.
Four Scotia-Glenville students and four Oaks Park students will discuss alternative energy and specifically address the use of nuclear, solar, wind and biomass during the debate.
“This is a wonderful experience that will strengthen my students’ understanding of alternative energy while also allowing them to get a glimpse into the thinking of their counterparts around the world,” he said.
The event will also feature the benefits of video conferencing to connect groups of people who are at remote locations.
Peter Shephard, Chief Learning and School Improvement Officer for the London Borough of Redbridge, and Mike Sylofski, Manager of E-Learning Services at the Northeastern Regional Information Center (Capital Region BOCES), will discuss the benefits of video conferencing.
The debate will also include short talks by Roger Evans, a member of the London Assembly and member of the Environment Committee; Dr. Tom Headen, a research scientist at Cella Energy Ltd. in Oxford, England; representatves of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA); and US Congressman Paul Tonko. He has been an advocate in the field of alternative energy as both a NYS assemblyman and now as a member of the Energy and Environment Subcommittee of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.
“I want to congratulate the students for getting involved in a topic that's critical to our nation and our world," said Congressman Tonko. "Expanding our energy portfolio to lessen our dependence on fossil fuels will extend our resources, control prices, and improve our environment. I'm looking forward to joining this discussion."
The debate will allow
for questions from the press at the end of the day around 11:25
a.m.
