Whether it was balancing a ball on a stick, scooting across mats Army style, filling a bottle of water by hand or taste testing healthy snacks, buddy teams of students at Glendaal today got a workout in the name of the Summer Olympics this summer in Brazil.
There was something for everybody at Camp Cardinal Down Under!...even the chocolate lover. Chocolate chips were part of the healthy snacks? "Dark chocolate is good for your heart," cheered one obviously happy young man.
The day began with a dedication to Carol Atkins, who is retiring as Glendaal's physical education teacher, as the "best physical education teacher at Glendaal" complete with a gold medal.
Students rotated through six stations - Athletic Training Obstacle Course; Taste Testing; Go for the Gold; Road to Rio Track and Field; Whitewater Rafting; and Olympic Rings - every 16 minutes. Some required students to run, jump and move while others involved water and (trying not to) get too wet on a warm, muggy day.
The goal was to reach the final destiny: eating popsicles while sitting in the shade at the top of the hill overlooking the field.
The buddy teams were: Gina Brown's grade 3 class paired with Beth Donovan's kindergartners; Lysle Perry's grade 3 class paired with Natasha Sweet's kindergartners; Darrell Doak's grade 5 class paired with Leanna Leffler's grade 2 class; Geoff Olsen's grade 5 class paired with Bridget MacLagger's grade 2 class; Juliana Potts's grade 4 class paired with William Vacca's grade 1 class; and Tana Case's grade 4 class paired with Susanne Doyle's grade 1 class.
This event was coordinated through the Fuel Up to Play 60 team of staff members.
