SCOTIA -- Two members of the Scotia-Glenville school district's board of education announced Monday they will not run for re-election this spring.

Karen Bradley and John Carpenter, who will have each served four terms and had a turn as school board president, are calling it quits.

Bradley cited family obligations as the main reason she would step down when her term expires June 30.

"I regret leaving because it's been so rewarding," she said. "But there are plenty of good people out there."

Bradley, 50, and her husband, David, both have elderly parents who are seriously ill.

Furthermore, the couple's youngest daughter is graduating from high school this year, which will create a natural break with the district, she said.

Bradley was the board's president from 1996-1999. Since July, she has been the body's vice president.

Carpenter, 53, served as president from 1999 to 2002 and as vice president from 1996-1998. He has lived in the district for 34 years and is a captain in the Scotia Fire Department. His term also expires June 30.

Carpenter graduated from nearby Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake schools and returned to the area after studying fire science at Idaho State University.

He and his wife, Carol, have two children. Carpenter wasn't available for comment on Monday.

Meanwhile, the school district has announced that residents are eligible to run in the May 16 election to replace either Bradley or Carpenter.

The election will take place at the same time that district residents vote on the budget for the 2006-2007 school year.

Petitions will be available in March from the district's business office. Office-seekers must get 59 signatures of district residents and return the petitions by April 17.

The terms are three years and the position is unpaid.
